“To be close to Jesus, that’s my life plan” – Bl. Carlo Acutis
Blessed Carlo Acutis was born in London in 1991 and spent his school-aged years in the city of Milan. As a high schooler, he leveraged his computer programming abilities for the Church by creating websites cataloging Eucharistic miracles and Marian apparitions around the world. He was passionate about helping those around him come to know Jesus and, during his short life, succeeded in helping lead countless others back to the Catholic faith. He had an amazing impact on his friends, family, and community. He passed away from Leukemia in 2006 at the young age of 15 and is buried in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Assisi.
Carlo has continued to have an immense impact on people around the world since his death. As one of his biographers has noted, Carlo shows Catholics of today “that Apple computers, Spiderman comics, and Super Mario on Nintendo 64 and a life of heroic virtue are not mutually exclusive.” He was beatified in October 2020 after a second miracle attributed to his intercession was confirmed. Most recently, in November 2024, Pope Francis announced that Blessed Carlo would officially be canonized during the Church’s Jubilee of Hope. He will become the Church’s first millennial saint during his canonization mass on April 27, 2025. His feast day is October 12.
Carlo is an example for all of us on how to live our lives focused on our Eternal reward, and how to enjoy life at every stage while striving to be courageous and faithful. Pope Francis says that “his witness shows today’s young people that true happiness is found by putting God first and serving him in our brothers, especially the least” (Angelus Address, Oct 11, 2020). His witness provides a tangible example of discipleship, scholarship, and community in the modern age, and he thus serves as an excellent patron for our school! He is an immensely relatable saint for today’s teens, as his life was filled with many of the same activities as young people today: from video games and soccer to hanging out with friends and completing homework assignments.
